galleries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>purchased credits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>replied to incoming contacts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>moved promising conversations off-platform when appropriate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, I tried to use the site properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 interesting because Ashley Madison explained that it could contact profiles that might be a good match on your behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I preferred to stay in control of who I contacted, so I didn&#8217;t want an automated matching feature initiating interactions for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also wasn&#8217;t comfortable automatically exchanging private-gallery access with strangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re joining Ashley Madison, these are exactly the kinds of settings I&#8217;d recommend actually reading class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the greeting, I kept things simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLooking for a discreet connection.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My bio was longer and focused on discretion, being non-judgmental and looking for something missing from a marriage rather than immediately jumping into anything explicit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also filled out the standard profile information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the part I cared about most was the information to identify themselves publicly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ashley Madison allows public and private photos and includes tools designed to disguise profile pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For my test, I ultimately used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>5 public photos<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>5 private photos<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For my main photo, I wanted potential matches to be able to tell what I looked like physically without exposing my face publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having an actual completed profile matters when evaluating the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I had uploaded one bad photo, written nothing in my bio and then complained nobody answered me, this experiment wouldn&#8217;t tell us very much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"\ud83d\udd0e-my-experience-browsing-ashley-madison-profiles\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd0e My Experience Browsing Ashley Madison Profiles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the profile was complete, I started using the Discover\/Search side of Ashley Madison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was where the experience became more mixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ashley Madison gives users quite a few ways to narrow down profiles, including things like age, distance, recent activity and photo availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the quality of the profiles you&#8217;re filtering through matters more than the number of filters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I encountered everything from detailed profiles to extremely sparse ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A noticeable number of profiles either had no public photo or used heavily obscured images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a discreet dating site that&#8217;s understandable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can&#8217;t automatically conclude that a faceless or blurred account is fake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone having an affair may have an extremely good reason not to upload an identifiable public photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One profile particularly caught my attention because the image looked unusually polished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After checking the photo elsewhere online, I found the same image associated with a public social-media account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does <strong>not<\/strong> tell me who created the Ashley Madison profile.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"509\" height=\"1024\" identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s an important distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wouldn&#8217;t extrapolate from one suspicious profile and claim that everyone on Ashley Madison is fake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it did make me more cautious about which profiles I contacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p galleries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some profiles provided enough information to write a genuinely personalized opening message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others gave me almost nothing to work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That difference became important once I started messaging people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn&#8217;t want to send the exact same generic introduction 45 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"\ud83d\udcac-the-message-strategy-i-used\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcac The Message Strategy I Used<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I tried to make my opening messages personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHey.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat&#8217;s up?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I used information from the person&#8217;s profile whenever possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The basic structure was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Show that I&#8217;d actually read her profile.<\/strong><br><strong>2. Explain why something she said interested me.<\/strong><br><strong>3. Find a point of compatibility.<\/strong><br><strong>4. Ask an easy question or leave room for her to respond.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if someone talked about wanting to escape routine, I might reference that specifically rather than opening with a generic compliment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea was simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I wanted to test Ashley Madison, not my ability to spam strangers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"\ud83e\uddea-i-sent-45-messages-on-ashley-madison-heres-what-happened\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\uddea I Sent 45 Messages on Ashley Madison \u2014 Here&#8217;s What class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>45 personalized opening messages.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I received:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>9 replies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s a raw response rate of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>20%.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, that doesn&#8217;t sound terrible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then I looked at <strong>what those nine replies actually were<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"my-response-breakdown\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">My response breakdown<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5 of the 9 replies<\/strong> ultimately involved promoting OnlyFans or another paid platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That left <strong>4 responses that weren&#8217;t immediately promotional<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two conversations became promising enough that I moved them away from Ashley Madison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even that wasn&#8217;t the end of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"\ud83d\udea9-five-replies-were-basically-promotions\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udea9 Five Replies Were Basically Promotions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was one of the most frustrating parts of the experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A response looks like success when you&#8217;re simply counting numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a person responding because they want you to purchase content somewhere else isn&#8217;t the same thing as someone responding because they&#8217;re interested in meeting you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five of my nine replies fell into that promotional category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why I think <strong>reply rate alone is a terrible way to measure whether an affair dating site works<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more meaningful metric is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How many conversations become something you&#8217;d actually want to pursue?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, that number was much smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"\ud83d\udd10-i-requested-10-private-galleries\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd10 I Requested 10 Private Galleries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Private photos are particularly important on Ashley Madison because so many users understandably hide their identities publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I requested access to <strong>10 private galleries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only <strong>3 requests were approved<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the three approvals were very different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One gallery barely contained anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another contained much more revealing content, but that user eventually tried to direct me toward paid content elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third seemed much more promising and developed into an actual conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"\ud83d\udcf8-image-placement-5\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcf8 IMAGE class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sounds great \u2014 until you discover that seeing or interacting with certain incoming communications can still become part of the paid experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I paid because I wanted to know whether the incoming attention was actually meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several of the messages I uncovered were extremely basic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHi.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHello.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing developed from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also received what appeared to be a platform-generated recommendation encouraging me to contact another profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want to be precise about this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The screenshot shows the message <strong>inside Ashley Madison&#8217;s interface<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s reasonable to assume the profile owner personally typed a recommendation written in third person about herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It appeared to be a platform-generated prompt designed to encourage another interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That kind of feature isn&#8217;t inherently wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But on a credit-based dating platform, automated prompts encouraging additional outreach are worth understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"\ud83d\udcf1-two-conversations-moved-off-ashley-madison\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcf1 Two Conversations Moved Off Ashley Madison<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the four responses that weren&#8217;t immediately promotional, two eventually moved away from Ashley Madison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, that seemed like progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving from a dating platform to another communication channel normally suggests a conversation is becoming more serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, neither became the kind of connection I was looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"\u26a0\ufe0f-one-video-conversation-raised-sextortion-concerns\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26a0\ufe0f One Video Conversation Raised Sextortion Concerns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One contact wanted to video chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initially, I saw that as a potentially positive sign because video can be a way for two people to establish that they are real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the interaction quickly became uncomfortable when I was pressured to expose myself on camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That immediately raised concerns about being recorded or potentially extorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I ended the interaction rather than taking the risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is worth remembering regardless of which dating platform you use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Never assume that moving off a dating site means someone is trustworthy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"\ud83d\udcb8-another-contact-eventually-asked-for-money\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcb8 Another Contact Eventually Asked for Money<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second off-platform conversation initially seemed more normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it eventually became clear that money was the objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, that doesn&#8217;t prove the dating platform itself created the person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dating services can attract scammers just like social networks, messaging apps and other online communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What matters to me as a user is how effectively suspicious behaviour is detected and removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"\ud83d\udcca-my-final-ashley-madison-results\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcca My Final Ashley Madison Results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all the profile building, searching, messaging and spending, here&#8217;s what the experiment looked like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>9 replies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>0 successful connections.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I had stopped the analysis at response rate, I could have said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAshley Madison gave me a 20% reply rate.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technically true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But wildly incomplete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five replies were promotional, and the two conversations that progressed furthest created additional concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why first-hand testing matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"\ud83e\udd14-what-i-learned-from-using-ashley-madison\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udd14 What I Learned From Using Ashley Madison<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several things became clear by the end of the experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"1-ashley-madison-does-have-real-activity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Ashley Madison does have real activity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I got replies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some conversations clearly involved real people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So my experience was <strong>not<\/strong> that Ashley Madison consisted entirely of fake accounts or bots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s too simplistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"2-a-reply-isnt-necessarily-a-useful-reply\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. A reply isn&#8217;t necessarily a useful reply<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was probably my biggest lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dating platform can produce messages without producing meaningful connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Promoters, scammers and people whose goals don&#8217;t match yours can inflate the apparent level of engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"3-credits-make-failed-interactions-feel-expensive\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. You still need a good profile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wouldn&#8217;t use my results as an excuse to create a terrible profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photos matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bios matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Messages matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact that I put significant effort into all three is precisely why the experiment is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Had I sent 45 identical \u201chey\u201d messages from an empty profile, the results wouldn&#8217;t tell us very much about Ashley Madison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"5-discretion-makes-profile-evaluation-harder\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Discretion makes profile evaluation harder<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A normal dating app encourages people to show themselves clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An affair dating service creates the opposite incentive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People may intentionally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>blur their
